India has reported its first instance of a new mpox strain, classified as clade 1b, which has led to a global public health emergency alert from the World Health Organization (WHO). This highly contagious variant is connected to the current outbreak in Africa. The infected individual is a 38-year-old man from Kerala who recently returned from Dubai. Mpox, Mpox Strain previously known as monkeypox, can cause painful skin lesions and is transmissible.
In August, the WHO declared Mpox Strain a public health emergency in Africa, and the variant has since appeared in other countries, including Sweden, Thailand, and Pakistan. The United States has committed to supporting the fight against the outbreak by providing 1 million doses of the Mpox Strain vaccine and over $500 million in assistance.
Addressing Antimicrobial Resistance at UNGA
During the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79), held from September 20-30, 2024, the WHO and its partners called on global leaders to confront urgent health challenges, particularly antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Before the high-level meeting on AMR, the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Health, convened experts to discuss transitioning from policy declaration to practical implementation of AMR strategies.
On September 26, the UN conducted a crucial meeting on AMR, which occurs when pathogens become resistant to treatments, creating a significant global health risk. Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director-General of Africa CDC, emphasized the critical nature of the AMR crisis, warning that it could result in 39.1 million deaths from 2025 to 2050, with annual deaths potentially reaching 4.1 million as Africa’s population grows. He urged for increased international cooperation and funding for infection control, diagnostics, and vaccines, asserting, “Without stronger public health systems, we’re just running in circles.”
Climate Mpox Strain and Health Dialogues at UNGA
During UNGA79 and Climate Week NYC 2024, leaders from various sectors gathered to discuss the relationship between climate change and health. Key discussions focused on how the healthcare sector can mitigate climate-related health risks, including heatwaves and disease outbreaks. Participants identified collaboration gaps and highlighted the need for innovative funding and resources to embed climate resilience within healthcare frameworks.
At the Climate Hub event, I stressed the urgent need to address the Mpox Strain health impacts of climate change. The effects are immediate, and global leaders must act quickly to safeguard vulnerable populations, particularly in Africa, which contributes minimally to greenhouse gas emissions yet suffers significantly from climate change.
Global Health News Highlights
Recent research from ING, featured in The Guardian, indicates that the global obesity crisis incurs higher costs than new weight-loss medications, prompting governments to prioritize preventive strategies like healthy diets and exercise. A study published in JAMA Network Open found microplastics in the olfactory bulbs of the brain, suggesting a potential route for these particles to penetrate the brain.
The Ipsos Health Service Report 2024 highlights mental health as the foremost global health concern, with 45% of respondents identifying it as their top issue, a rise from 27% six years prior. Canadian research indicates that elevated levels of amyloid-beta and tau proteins in the brain might alter activity before Alzheimer’s symptoms manifest.
WHO data reveals that 31% of adults—around 1.8 billion individuals—failed to meet the recommended physical activity levels in 2022, jeopardizing the target of reducing physical inactivity by 2030. Afghanistan is facing a potential polio outbreak after the Taliban halted vaccination campaigns, with the WHO confirming 18 new cases this year, up from 6 in 2023. Additionally, research shows that one in three children are now short-sighted, linked to COVID lockdowns and increased screen time. Finally, the US FDA has authorized nasal spray flu vaccines for at-home use with a prescription.
Additional Mpox Strain Health Insights
The climate crisis is a major concern for global health, affecting air quality, food security, and overall well-being. Collaborative efforts among major organizations aim to address the health effects of climate change by reinforcing health systems and prioritizing adaptation for vulnerable populations.
Insights from the COVID-19 pandemic enabled swift access to vaccine funding during the early phases of the mpox health emergency, with Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, playing a vital role. Gavi’s CEO, Sania Nishtar, has discussed the organization’s dedication to creating a stockpile of Mpox Strain vaccines for future outbreaks.
Moreover, the WHO’s strategy to eliminate cervical cancer has the potential to save over 62 million women from cervical cancer deaths and prevent 74 million cases over the next century, provided that resources are allocated fairly to screening, treatment, and vaccination initiatives.
